Would this be true? The sum total should be the same. The smaller files should then allow for finer detail information without overwhelming the printer memory. Perhaps this might work also in kitbashing, to create parts needed for detailing locomotives and cars Actually, I was thinking that the computer files for individual flat parts would require less memory. One use for 3D as per Doc Wayne's comment would be making "restoration" parts- where you have a damaged built structure or an incomplete kit as from a swap meet - and you re-create the original, using either a remaining like part or by drawing a new plan view diagram of the original part. The structures shown could have been built using traditional methods and materials, with the 3D technology used for something more complex, such as complicated ornamental brickwork or unique architectural details or windows. I see places where it makes sense to use one method over the other, and also to combine methods to produce the finished model. I was wondering though whether it might be quicker and easier to print the individual building components and then assemble them kit style? If you could include more detail information into each component design, wouldn't the printer then be able to give you the desired detail resolution? #HO SCALE 3D PRINT FILES INSTALL#
I did install Sketchup to try it but didn t get very far yet. In the meantime, I will see if I can master the required 3D drawing.

OK, I guess my next toy needs to be a 3D printer. And they're useful for modelers doing it by hand, too!I designed this and 3d printed it on my Afinia printer.

This is vital raw material needed to prepare any CAD file. This could possibly include perpendicular photography that is reasonably scalable. Files to support "subtractive machining" using CNC mills, routers, engravers, lathes and laser cutters are equally important.įor instance, people working in hobby robotics have made some profound developments in low cost precision CNC mold making and resin casting that are directly applicable to our hobby. In my opinion such a section for Maker related files needs to aim wider than just 3D printers. I think this would be a great endeavor to differentiate MRH from other model railroading journals, help move the hobby forward into the 21st Century mainstream and attract more younger modelers. This gives onlookers a degree of confidence that the file is printable. Those are much more accessible to the majority of the community. I wonder if there's interest in also doing something similar for 2D blueprints. That way, Joe doesn't have to worry about file size on the MRH server. Maybe even make it one of those subscriber-only things. So i guess it can be quite varied as to file size depending on what it is that has been designed Might be easier if Joe opened a Github page in the name of MRH, then had a link to it somewhere here maybe under the 'Goodies' drop-down in the menu? Some of the smaller objects I have created like small oil barrels HO Scale are typically about Kb. File size really depends on the size of the 3D object you design but a typical medium sized. Can you tell me how large these files might be, typically? So not large at all. I respect the time involved and would be willing to consider paying someone to modify their design and print it. It would be nice if there were a GitHub or MRH repository for designs even at a cost to use the design. I have a feeling that the learning curve is steep to design a new object and other than putting it on your own layout what is it worth. I hope it happens that downloads can be printed.

Is there any chance of having an area where we can post and share 3D printer files? I think it would be a great resource for modelers with 3D printers.
